E78ST Fall Newsletter
Dearest Neighbors,
Halloween, big elections, new garbage cans, oh my!
It’s been a busy season in the world, and on the lovely block we call home, and we hope our annual fall letter finds you very well. Speaking of Halloween…wow! If you happened to be on the block on that festive Thursday, you saw the glorious mobs of tiny ghosts, princesses, and fire chiefs guiding their parents toward our generous neighbors’ doors. It was a wonderful scene, and a tribute to those that make East 78th Street a legendary Halloween destination for kids, (and adults)!
Though it sure doesn’t seem it, winter is just around the corner, and it will soon be time to plant the tulip and daffodil bulbs that will light up our spring. This means it’s officially the end of the impatiens that we planted at the end of May. Many thanks to all who came out and lent a hand.
Um, particularly the kids….
A note on tree beds: You may have noticed a brand new, expanded tree bed on the south side of the block, which is entirely thanks to our friends at 220 E 78 St. With that, and those taken care of by the block association, we have rebuilt and expanded five planters in just the last few years, and we can do more with your help!
For those just tuning in: The block association is a strictly volunteer, neighbor-funded operation. We maintain 41 tree beds, each with two flower plantings a year, as well as tree pruning and care. Every dollar we get in donations helps put more flowers on the block, expand our tree beds, and keep our trees healthy. To put it simply: No donations, no flowers! Also, dirty, broken enclosures, and unhealthy or disappearing trees! We welcome everyone’s involvement, and our work is made possible by your donations — all of which are fully tax deductible.
OK, donation time! If you can, please tap or click the button below to give online at whatever level you can. You can also write a check to Trees 78 Foundation, which is our official 501 C-3 sponsor. (See details at bottom.)
Thank you in advance!
And, finally, a lightning round of block news!
Hello more pIlates & fine alterations! We welcome two new business to the south side of the block: PilatesTime NYC and Pak’s Custom Tailor.
Goodbye garbage mountains? The city has passed a new “containerization” law, and all residential garbage from smaller (1-9 unit) buildings will soon need to be placed on the curb in a standard garbage can. For details, see here.
I want my 78th St Tee!: The rumors are true, we have our very own t-shirt. 100% organic cotton, with our iconic hand made logo from the 1970s. See here to purchase!
If you have news, or want to get in touch, please email us at info@e78st.org.
Thanks so much, and here’s to a beautiful late fall and winter on our block!
Sincerely,
The 200 Block E. 78 St Association
