Fall 2023 Newsletter
Dearest Neighbors,
Happy Thanksgiving! The big day is upon us, and golden leaves are swirling about the block—or they were before the rain! We hope this finds you very well. We're excited to see that many more people have signed up for our email newsletter, and welcome to all!
We have much thanks to give, and lots to report in this edition.
First, it's once again bulb planting time! Look for the crew from City-Scape Landscaping on the block soon, cleaning and fertilizing the beds, and planting tulips and daffodils which will emerge next spring in all their glory.
For those keeping count, the fall planting is our second of the year: In June, an all-ages crew of neighbors came out for the annual summer planting. Armed with sturdy trowels, grownups and toddlers braved the city soil, planting pink and white impatiens up and down the block.
Slowly but surely, the block is upping its tree bed game: In the past year, we expanded several beds, upgrading their enclosures at the same time, and there are three more to come this year. Also new to the block is the Sophora tree (or Japanese Pagoda) in front of 233 East 78th Street.
Trees and flowers are not all that's new: Several businesses set up shop this year, and we welcome them all, including the House of Flowerz, Sushi Spot, and Chess Max Academy. At the same time, it was a sad day for many of us when Woody's Laundry & Dry Cleaning closed after more than 25 years in business at 220 East 78th. We wish to thank Woody and his family for all the wonderful years!
Many thanks to everyone who donated last year! Your contributions make the flowers and trees possible. The block association is a volunteer, neighbor-funded operation. We welcome everyone’s involvement, and donations. All gifts are tax deductible.
To donate online with any major credit card, visit our block website, e78st.org, and click on the Donate button. If you prefer, you can also write a check to Trees 78 Foundation, which is our official 501 C-3 sponsor. (See details below.)
If you have ideas for the block, or want to get involved, please shoot us a line at info@e78st.org. Also, send along any pictures for the website! Thanks so much, and here’s to a beautiful late fall and winter on our block!
Sincerely,
